Workshop Descriptions & Objectives

Monday – March 28th

Workshop One   1:30- 4:30  Collective Efficacy: Creating a Community Collaboration  Presenter: Julie Stevens, MPS, ACPS, ICPS

An understanding of community collaboration is something that every prevention specialist should possess.  Effective prevention requires the support of the focus community, knowledge of the demographics and norms of the community, and formation of strategic alliances.   This workshop will discuss the tasks associated with community organizing and collective efficacy.

Participants will learn how to build community ownership of activities by collaborating in planning, implementing and evaluating prevention strategies.

Objectives:

  1. Perform tasks associated with community organizing
  2. Engage a diverse group of stakeholders in prevention planning activities

Tuesday – March 29th

Workshop Two   9:00- 12:00   Fostering and Maintaining Emotional Health  Presenter: Marissa Carlson, CPS

This workshop explores what emotional health is, how our emotional health impacts us, and what we can do to foster our emotional health – both for ourselves as prevention professionals and the community and program participants with whom we work.  We’ll go beyond the typical feelings and self-care conversations to delve into what our emotional health looks like for us, how to recognize when our emotional health is being impacted, and how to nurture it. Participants will experience the activities for themselves and receive the materials needed to facilitate these activities with their colleagues and service recipients.

Participants will learn three different activities related to emotional health to engage colleagues and/or program participants.

Objectives:

  1. Recognize our emotional “Danger Zones”, recognize how to adjust our coping to keep us in our “Healthy Zones”, and identify ways to nurture our own emotional health
  2. Facilitate the included emotional health activities with colleagues and/or prevention program participants.

Bonus Workshop 12:30-1:30    Unlocking Community True Engagement with HUE Conversations   Presenter- Dave Closson, MS

Community engagement starts with conversations and with so many stakeholders to engage who all think in different ways, the conversations you have can make it or break it! This lunch-and-learn will unpack how prevention practitioners can facilitate inclusive conversations that encourage participation from every group member and naturally move the collective from inquiry to informed action. Additionally, participants will learn not only the natural way the brain processes information, but also an understanding of how individual personality traits can influence thinking.

Objectives:

  1. Learn professional strategies for authentic and inclusive participation.
  2. Develop skills to guide meaningful conversations that lead to desired outcomes.

Workshop Three   1:30- 4:30  Facilitating Collaboration in Work Groups  Presenter: Allison Sharer, OCPC

Preventionists often have to lead work groups at some point in our career. For most of us, we simply repeat the role as we have seen others do it. But there is an art and a bit of science to fostering truly collaborative and productive work groups. Join us as we explore group development and maintenance issues, including collaboration, leadership, facilitation, and decision-making approaches.

Participants will learn how to facilitate group processes; encourage participation; ensure quality decisions.

Objectives:

  1. Identify participation gaps
  2. Identify their own leadership tendencies and any leadership tasks they may need to develop so that their style can support

Wednesday – March 30th

Workshop Four   9:00- 12:00   Making the Most Out of the Moment  Presenters: Jonathan Edwards, LPC-Associate, CPS, JSO. and Hayley Olson, MEd, PSC, LPC-Associate

The goal of this presentation is provide theoretical approaches towards conversing with youth regarding substance misuse. This approach is focused on how to garner important information from a youth that maybe in the process of disclosing their own personal use. This workshop will also emphasize making the most out of the limited amount of time spent with program recipients.

Participants will learn narrative and Solution-Focused approaches.

Objectives:

  1. Gain a holistic awareness of the environment that modern drug use occurs for youth and young adults
  2. Name theoretical approaches to communicate with youth regarding personal risk of substance misuse and or current use and concerns.

Workshop Five   9:00- 12:00- Ethical Decision Making  Presenter: Dr. Lisa Perry, IC&RC Certified Prevention Specialist

This workshop will teach participants about the ethical decision making process. Participants will work through new case studies to identify how to arrive at the most appropriate and ethical solutions to prevention-related dilemmas in the workplace.

Participants will learn how to apply professional codes of conduct/ethics related to the prevention profession.

Objectives:

  1. Apply the Prevention Code of Ethics Decision Making Process to funding-related ethical situations
  2. Understand the relationship between funding decisions and ethical applications

Thursday – March 31st

Workshop Six   9:00- 12:00   Become a Super Communicator  Presenter: Edie De Vilbiss, M.S. Counselor Ed., M. Div., D. Ministry

This workshop equips participants with the keys to effective communication. Listening well, check understanding, clear messaging. Whether working with a community group, political organization, or gathering of disinterested youth, the skills you pick up here will increase your effectiveness. Your message is too important to leave to chance. The workshop format of this training will instill this framework so you can use it in your next interaction.

Participants will learn how to model appropriate behaviors and communication skills

Objectives:

  1. Recognize preconceived conclusions before they get in the way. Listen to the words, tone, and undertone of a message. Reflect a message until understanding is reached.
  2. Craft your message with clarity. Deliver it with skill. Maintain respect in the midst of differing views.

Workshop Seven    1:30- 4:30- Building Blocks for Effective Training  Presenter: Allison Sharer, OCPC

Many preventionists are asked to create a workshop, training or other educational event, and yet have never been trained in how to build effective trainings. We will identify 6 building blocks for effective trainings and delve deeper into the DESIGN block. We will explore the importance of texture, and tools to texturize our sessions to optimize learning. We will also explore key aspects of the other building blocks and how they support the design of the training.

Participants will learn the importance of “texturizing” their sessions and how often to do it.

Objectives:

  1. Organizing presentation logically, building rapport,
  2. Apply four tools for texturizing their sessions.

Friday – April 1st

Workshop Eight   9:00- 12:00  Child and Adolescent Development Critical Periods: what we need to know and why  Presenter: Dr. Marcia Baker

This presentation will provide the participant information on areas of development that are important during our “critical years”. Information will be provided that assists the prevention specialist in understanding what they need to focus on and how come during curriculum presentations and coalition development.

Participants will learn how to utilize their prevention skills during prevention education.

Objectives:

  1. Participants will review basic stages of child and adolescent development with critical period emphasis.
  2. Understand how to utilize assist development of prevention skills during prevention education.
